Description
Natraj is the dancing Lord Shiva, one of the best known and most respected gods of the Hindu religion. You can pray at this symbolic statue or place it as a decoration in your home or office. This statue is a source of positive energy and vibrations. It stimulates courage, hope, power, knowledge, intellect and dedication.
What is the symbolism of Natraj?
Natraj, also called Nataraja, which literally means "Lord of the Dance", is the Hindu god Shiva, represented as a cosmic dancer. Natraj is often found in Indian temples, especially in the south of India. Natraj is usually depicted with 4 arms and dancing on a dwarf. This dwarf is called Apasmara and is the symbol of human ignorance.
In his right hand at the back, Shiva holds a damaru (hourglass-shaped drum). The right hand at the front makes a "don't be afraid" gesture (palm facing out and fingers pointing up). The left hand at the back carries Agni (fire) and the left hand at the front is held over his chest in the posture of Gajahasta (elephant trunk), with a limp wrist and fingers pointing down at the raised left foot. The whole is surrounded by a ring of flames.
The image represents Shiva's 5 activities, resp. creation (the drums), protection (don't be afraid gesture), destruction (the fire), embodiment (the foot on the ground) and letting go (the lifted foot). It shows Shiva as the source of all movement in the cosmos.
According to the myth, this creation dance was performed in Chidambaram (an important Shaiva center in South India). This place is identified with both the center of the universe and the human heart.
